What This Lesson Covers:
This is Volume #1 of a new series on the site called "How To Play By Ear". In this lesson I teach how to take 2 versions of a C Major Scale and find "Simple" melodies within that basic scale shape. By learning these "Scale Positions/Shapes" one is easily able to move the Grips or the Shapes around the neck in order to play melodies in different keys. In this lesson (Video #1) I teach you the Major Scale Shapes and how I take basic simple melodies and show you how they fit within the scale shape and how you can easily harmonize the melody. In Video #2 we work with the tune Amazing Grace. I show you how it fits within the scale shape, how to harmonize, and how to play it in any key. This lesson also comes with Tablature, Handouts, and 12 Mp3 Tracks for playing along with "Amazing Grace" (1 For Every Key!!!)

In this lesson we follow up with what we learned in Volume 1, and we are learning how to find all the "Chord Tones" or Arpeggios of each Chord in the Key of C in Closed Position (No Open Strings). By doing this and adding what you learned in Volume #1 (The Major Scale in 2 Versions), you will have a really good understanding of the fretboard in closed position. This should allow you the ability to now know Scales and Arpeggios in a great Movable Closed Position. So when you are playing by ear you now will have lots of tools at your disposal to really find those notes, melodies, or licks your are looking for, in a great movable shape.

We are in the Key of C, but everything covered in this lesson can be moved around to other Keys as well. I go over a Huge Amount Of Chord Progressions, 28 Total!!! Each chord progression comes with an Mp3 Jam track so you can hear what it sounds like, and practice either playing the chords, or improvising over the progression. I also go over playing chord tones on your first string, and how to navigate your way through the chord changes by playing on 1 string, playing in moved block positions, playing what you learned in the previous 2 lessons, using scales or arpeggios.
