What this lesson covers:

What This Lesson Covers:
In this lesson, I have written out 10 pages of Tablature covering 36 Licks In The Key of A in Standard Open G Tuning (GBDGBD). Normally people need to use a Capo to play in the Key of A. However, in this lesson I show you how to use the open strings to your advantage! The Key of A with no Capo is great for playing Blues and the majority of these licks are Blues Licks. However, you can also use them for Bluegrass and even Western Swing. In this video I also talk about what scales and chord tones these licks are derived from.

This is PART 1 of a 2 part series called "39 Basic Backup Licks".  This lesson is designed for the Beginning to Beginning/Intermediate student.  In this lesson I show in great detail how to play each of the 39 Licks.  I start off with the most basic of the backup licks and the licks increase in difficulty as the lesson progresses.  The more intermediate level licks are toward the middle to end of the video.  I show close ups of the left hand and then close ups of the right hand.  I also spend time counting the rhythm of each lick and explaining what beat or part of the beat to start the lick, which is really important to playing it in rhythm.

This is my 2nd version of Silent Night. It is in the Key of C and I tried to make a version that has that "Old Timey" Dobro sound. I use lots of Slants, Slides, 2 Note Pinches, etc to give it that sound more like you would from someone like Bashful Brother Oswald. I've kept the arrangement fairly simple, so that you could even add more of your own embellishments if you want as well. This is a great lesson/song to work on your Slants and playing them in tune with the really nice Backing tracking in 3/4 time. I think you will have a lot of fun with this one!!!
